Background:

  • The State Department of Health, Cleft Palate Section in November 1969 approved the Northwestern Pennsylvania Cleft Palate Institute (Institute) as an operational clinic.

  • The Institute was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on April 11, 1973.

  • The Institute is one of eleven state recognized centers authorized to provide comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans for newborns & children presenting craniofacial anomalies (cleft lip/palate).

  • The Institute is located at Hamot Medical Center Complex.

  • The Institute’s clinical team includes twenty-nine (29) volunteers who represent all areas of medical, dental, communication, nursing and psychological disciplines.

  • The Institute is a member of the PA Federation of Cleft Palate Clinics and The American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association.

  • All Team members are appropriately certified in their specialty.

  • The Team meets monthly to provide diagnostic services and guidance to patients and families.

  • The Board of Directors is a fourteen-member community represented group. The Board is responsible for the operation of the organization.

  • A part-time Clinical Director (one day weekly) is responsible for the daily operation of program/service management.

  • A secretary is employed for thirty hours weekly.

  • Dental Auxiliary volunteers assist at each monthly clinic.
